Warm welcome for Jamaican visitor

Fresh from visiting Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI) Global Mission Workers in Portugal, PCI’s Moderator, Right Reverend Dr David Bruce, extended a warm welcome to Rev J Oliver Daley, former Moderator of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, when he met with members of PCI’s Council for Global Mission over lunch today.

The retired minister was accompanied by his friend and host on his Belfast visit, PCI’s former Moderator, Very Rev Dr John Dunlop. From 1968 to 1978 Dr Dunlop and his wife Rosemary served in overseas mission in Jamaica where they first met Rev Daley.

For 170 years until the 1990s Irish Presbyterians served the Church in Jamaica in various capacities, including Rev Dr Liz Hughes, convener of PCI’s Council for Global Mission. Along with her husband, Rev Brian Hughes, they both served in Jamaica during the 1980s and 1990s, where they also met Rev Daley.

Ordained in 1969, he served twice as Moderator of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and was President of the Jamaica Council of Churches. For nearly 30 years he also served as a Radio Family Counsellor until 2007.

Welcoming Rev Daley, Dr Bruce said, “Apart from the fact that we are ministers and two-term Moderators of our respective denominations, we also hold something precious in common – we are both brothers in Christ. Every year, not just at our General Assembly when we welcome our overseas guests from partner churches, we also welcome many people to Assembly Buildings from around the world. It was a pleasure to meet Oliver and take time to get to know him and pray with him today.”
