As with all his sermons since the lockdown began and churches closed in March, Dr Henry recorded the service in his home congregation, Maze Presbyterian, earlier this week. “In doing these services, I wanted to support colleagues who may not have been able to do them online. At the same time, uppermost in my mind was the sense of identity, of being a Presbyterian family who couldn’t meet together and I wanted to give expression to that in the midst of everything.
“In ‘Hope beyond Lockdown’ I have been focusing on things that are important to all of us a church. This morning’s sermon is on the value of friendship within church as a reminder of the important things we miss out on during this time of lockdown. How to be a good friend, the characteristics of friendship, and what can break friendships, all to see the importance of these things once we get back to ‘normal’ church again.” Dr Henry’s sermon is taken from 1 Samuel, chapters 18 and 19, on the friendship of David and Jonathan.

During the service, Dr Henry will reflect on his theme for his year in office, which has been ‘Enjoying God’. The Prayers of Intercession will be for the 2020 Standing Commission of the General Assembly as it considers the work before it on Tuesday and Wednesday and for the incoming Moderator, Rev Dr David Bruce.
The service will close with the worship song, ‘What a friend we have in Jesus’. Dr Bruce will be installed as Moderator at a special installation service tomorrow, 1 June at 7pm, which will be livestreamed from Assembly Buildings via this website.
