The Sunday Service: Home – an introduction

7.6.2020 | Congregational Life, Moderator, Church Life, COVID-19 Emergency, The PCI Sunday Service

Having been installed as Moderator on Monday evening, Rt Rev Dr David Bruce gives his first online Sunday service today.

Like his, predecessor Dr William Henry, Dr Bruce will continue to give an online Sunday Service while churches remain closed due to the Coronavirus emergency. Recorded in the Weir Chapel in Assembly Buildings in Belfast, the Moderator explained that his first sermon is an introduction to his theme for the year – ‘Home’. “In the coming weeks and through the summer, I plan to look at Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, thinking about how Church is our spiritual home.

“This week, however, I want to paint a picture with a very broad brush, showing how God’s plan for His people is to be with us – at home with us,” he said.

“I will start with Genesis 12:1-9 where God sends Abraham away from his home to a new home in land he doesn’t know, and asks him to walk by faith. I will refer to Luke 15:11-32, where Jesus tells a story about a father with two sons – one of whom leaves home; later to return unsure of the kind of welcome he will receive.”

This hymns and worship songs will be:

  • Christ Triumphant, ever reigning
  • From heaven you came
  • No longer a slave to fear
  • Thine be the Glory

This week, the Clerk of the General Assembly and General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Rev Trevor Gribben, and David Thompson, who is Secretary to the Council of Congregational Life & Witness, will also participate in the service.

Dr Bruce will interview Rev Jim Stothers, who retires at the end of this year, about his role as Deputy Clerk, following the appointment of his successor this week.
