Moderator’s Service: ‘The church where God is found’

16.8.2020 | Moderator, COVID-19 Emergency, The PCI Sunday Service

In his weekly service looking at Ephesians, Presbyterian Moderator Rt Rev Dr Bruce reaches the end of Chapter 2, and explores how the church is the place where God is found. He traces the background to the Temple in the Old Testament, and shows how, in Christ, the Temple is no longer a physical building, but the ordinary, everyday people of God themselves.

This morning Dr Bruce looks at Ephesians 2:19-22. “Today we will explore the theme, ‘The church where God is found’. At a time when many people are wondering about the future, and even about the meaning of life, the church ought to be a place where God is found.” he said.

As in previous weeks, members of PCI’s 19 local presbyteries will take part in the service. Joining Dr Bruce this week are members of the Presbytery of Armagh. During the service Clerk of Presbytery, Rev Peter Gamble, minister of The Mall Presbyterian Church in Armagh, will be joined by Rev Robin Brown, Moderator of Presbytery and minister of First Portadown (Edenderry) Presbyterian Church. They will introduce the Presbytery in a short video, read from the Bible and pray.

The Armagh Presbytery encompasses much of the historic county. It’s 29 congregations stretch from the southern shore of Lough Neagh to the border near Keady, and from Waringstown into the south-east corner of Tyrone. These urban and rural congregations range in size from those with 17 families to more than 550, and are made up of over 10,500 people of all ages.

Songs included this week include:

  • Blessed be your name
  • Shout to the north
  • Cornerstone

At the close of the service, Rev Joanne Smith, who is the minister of Caledon and Minterburn Presbyterian Churches in the Armagh Presbytery, will lead in a prayer for others.

Recorded in the Weir Chapel in Assembly Buildings in Belfast, the Moderator will continue to bring this service to the wider Presbyterian family during the summer months and into September.

Next week…

Next Sunday, the Moderator will be joined by members of the Presbytery of Down, when the theme of the service will be ‘A Church with a message’.
