Presbyterian Moderator is Special Guest at Westminster Seminary

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Stafford Carson will be warmly welcomed back to Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia next Monday, 19 April to take part in two functions to mark his year as Moderator.

Dr Carson, a graduate and former member of staff at the Seminary has been invited to preach at a special service for staff and students in the Chapel at Westminster and then will be the guest of the theological faculty at a special reception being held in his honour.

In 1980 Dr Carson graduated with a Masters in Arts and Ministry from Westminster and then returned in 2000 to serve as Academic Dean for five years.

"The years I spend at Westminster as a student and staff member were both formative to my ministry as well as being personally enjoyable," commented Dr Carson. "I'm greatly looking forward to meeting old friends and colleagues and am greatly honoured to be invited back for these special events."

Taking its name from the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Seminary was established in the early 1930's to promote the exposition and defence of the reformed faith. Today it is regarded as a world leading school of theology and a number of Irish Presbyterian ministers have studied there at both undergraduate and post graduate level

During his week long visit to the States Dr Carson will fulfill a number of engagements including preaching at both morning services in the historic Tenth Presbyterian Church in the centre of Philadelphia on Sunday morning, 18 April.

Just like their visit to Westminster this will be another 'homecoming' for both Dr and Mrs Carson who, during their time living in Philadelphia made Tenth their regular place of worship and where Dr Carson regularly preached.

And it won't just be the Philadelphia congregation that can experience Dr Carson's address but a worldwide one as Tenth webcasts its services on their website at www.tenth.org

A congregation of the Presbyterian Church of America, Tenth was founded in 1828 and has grown as the city it serves has prospered today having 1500 members and a staff of 12 with specialist ministries in several areas including families, city outreach and discipleship.

The current minister, Dr Philip Ryken, is a personal friend of the Moderator and was his invited guest speaker at last year's General Assembly in Belfast. Dr Ryken is soon to leave Tenth to take up his new role as President of the prestigious Wheaton College, in Wheaton, Illinois, near Chicago.
