Leading edge offers a programme of five mornings spread across a six month period offering the opportunity to come together with others to explore some key aspects of leading others in the church today.

Together, all five days can also be accessed as a package of annual ministerial in-service training that will also include some guided reading and a one-to-one conversation with a course facilitator about the specific challenges or opportunities in your leadership setting.

Each gathering will offer a mix of Bible engagement, equipping for leadership, discussion, personal reflection and learning with others.

Programme

Themes that will be explored together are:

DAY 1: 12 October 2023 | LEADING FROM A PLACE OF ACCEPTANCE

‘Accepted in the beloved’ (Ephesians 1:6). Leading involves taking responsibility. That can feel exhilarating at first, but over time can become a heavy burden to bear. Remembering that we are accepted by God, not because of anything we do, and that yoked to Christ, he bears the greater part is key to creating a healthier, sustainable approach.

DAY 2: 23 November 2023 | LEADING IN DISORIENTING TIMES

‘It isn’t getting any easier!’ The task of leading in the church in the changing circumstances in which we find ourselves is perhaps greater than ever. How can we better understand the leadership task we face today and, where necessary, think about it in fresh ways?

DAY 3: 11 January 2024 | LEADING WELL WITH OTHERS

‘If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.’ How can we better go together to go farther in our church life? What would it be like to adopt a more facilitative approach to leading in our congregations and how might that be a healthy, practical expression of our Presbyterian approach to church government? What potential might that unlock? What challenges might we encounter in ourselves and others?

DAY 4: 22 February 2024 | LEADING WITHOUT HAVING TO FEEL IN CONTROL

‘It’s not all down to me!’ How can we lead without having to feel we are in charge of every detail? How might we adopt a less controlling style of leadership that enables greater engagement, involvement, ownership and sharing of responsibility? Some basic tips and techniques for bringing the best out of people in meetings, groups, events and times of learning together.

DAY 5: 7 March 2024 | LEADING FOR A CHANGE

‘The only constant is change!’ While the message never changes, we all feel the strains and stresses of navigating necessary changes in congregational life and witness that come with needing to do many things differently and some different things. So how can we lead change in the church positively and pastorally, wisely and winsomely?
