Postcard from Nepal: Three pastors

Rt Rev Dr Frank Sellar

In this his second blog from Kathmandu, the Moderator, Rt. Rev. Dr. Frank Sellar, writes about the call that God has on the lives of three pastors that he has met in the Himalayan nation - each from very different backgrounds.

Pastor Luke was born in a remote part of northern Nepal, close to the border with China. When he was 14 a team from Youth With A Mission, better known as YWAM, came to his school and preached the gospel. They left some tracts and that’s how he came to trust in Jesus. He became an evangelist travelling from village to village, sometimes rejected, sometimes beaten – but always believing.

Now married with two sons, he is a leader in a church in Dhading. There are 200 boys and girls in the Sunday School, however it doesn’t actually meet on a Sunday, but on Saturday, as that's the day most people get off work here. When the current building was being constructed, the congregation decided to include taps and a free fresh water supply for the community.

"Why?" asked some. "Why, when these people persecuted you?" "Because in Romans 12:20 it says 'If your enemy is hungry feed him; and if he is thirsty give him something to drink...do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

Pastor Mahendra was born in Kathmandu and went to a Christian school in India. There he met his wife to be - and Jesus. He studied in England and was baptised there. "Maybe because I wasn't ready for this step at home. Maybe because I hadn't enough courage," he told me.

Whatever the reason, he has made up for that perceived tardiness, establishing 24 churches and 36 fellowships. Churches must have a women's group and men's fellowship, a children's group and a youth organisation. Fellowships haven't achieved that yet. This year his congregation is praying for 6 new churches and next year they will pray to establish 12 more.

Pastor Alistair was born in Canada, of Christian parents from Northern Ireland. He studied at Moody College, Westminster and Regent, Vancouver. After ministering in Brussels, seeking God's fresh direction and having been brought on a hiking trek to Nepal as a teen, the seed was sown to pastor an international congregation in Kathmandu.

Now, along with his wife and three young children, he lives and works in this multicultural place. Each week new people from all over the world arrive at worship, while others return to their native lands. Ambassadors, NGOs, refugees, missionaries and tourists all make up this fascinating and eclectic mix of worshippers.

I have been privileged to meet three very different born again pastors here, each one following the call the Lord Jesus has on their lives. Each being truly blessed in their ministries.

Our God is the God of global concern and we are invited to share His passion too.
