Birthday Project 2010-2011

Our Birthday Project 2010–2011 will support God’s work in the Synod of Livingstonia in Malawi in several ways.

In Livingstonia itself we will be able to provide an industrial washing machine and a much needed haemoglobin machine for the David Gordon Memorial Hospital, where Una Brownlie works. Also in Livingstonia our gifts will support the Primary Health Care programme in which the organiser visits orphans and their guardians on a regular basis. She takes maize, cooking oil, baby formula and soap to each family and monitors their situation. This programme is entirely dependent on donations, so our support will help to improve the lives of extremely vulnerable children.

In Ekwendeni we will support the work of Women’s Empowerment. This work is done through the churches and is organised by Victoria Chihani assisted by Helen Quinn. Initially Presbyteries choose one lady from each congregation to be trained. These ladies in turn train seven others from their congregation so that eight now know how to prepare a business plan. Four of the group are given a loan and when these loans are repaid the next four receive their loans. Businesses may be buying and selling a commodity, hairdressing, tin-smithing, raising chickens, or baking doughnuts. Being given the means to work encourages the women to a greater degree of independence and helps them to provide school fees for their children. Our provision of loans for the project will enable women to be trained in more congregations.

In Mzuzu our gifts will also support the work of Diane Cusick as she organises pre-school play groups under the auspices of the church. Diane is responsible for over 300 groups within the Synod of Livingstonia. Her main work is the training of teachers at a cost of £100 per teacher. There is a constant demand for more teachers to be trained so that each congregation can have an effective pre-school group where children will be taught in a Christian setting and learn Christian values.

We also give financial support to our missionaries through the PW Mission Fund for Home and Overseas and may we remember that they also need our prayer support.
