Presbyterian Moderator Dr Stafford Carson visited the Ozone Centre this morning to show his solidarity with the Romanian families there and give support to the many groups and organisations providing help and assistance.
"What happened last night in Belfast with Romanian families being subjected to attacks and abuse and ultimately having to leave their homes has no place whatsoever in our society and the actions of the individuals involved are simply unacceptable," said Dr Carson.
"Their repulsive actions are in contrast to the help and care offered by the Council, churches, other organisations and compassionate individuals. Through their practical help, I believe they reflect the true values of the overwhelming majority of our community.
"A Christian imperative is to receive the stranger and reach out in compassion to all those in need. The challenge to us as a community is to put this into practice and we must make every effort change the hearts and attitudes of the minority who simply want to exclude any one who is different.
"The Romanian people I met today are part of our community and I would ask everyone to welcome them and help them as they seek to live and work and bring up their families here just as we do."
