African Journeys

A collection of articles written by the late Dr Donald Brownlie, one of the best known Irish Presbyterian Missionaries of the Twentieth Century have recently been published. The booklet, entitled African Journeys details Dr Brownlie's experiences as a young missionary in Malawi from 1969 - 1972. Money raised from sales of the book will aid the ongoing work at the David Gordon Memorial Hospital in Livingstonia.

Dr Brownlie went to Malawi as a newly qualified doctor in 1969 and was posted to the small rural hospital at Livingstonia in the remote north of the country. He was the only doctor at the hospital at that time and also had responsibility for several rural health centres within a radius of 30 miles of Livingstonia.

Soon after his arrival he began writing a monthly article about his travels and experiences for Outward Bound Magazine, which was published for teenagers and young people by the Sunday School Department of the Presbyterian Church. The writings catch the enthusiasm, sense of excitement and adventure as well as the strong Christian commitment of such a unique individual.

Dr Brownlie was awarded the OBE in June 2004 and died later that summer after battling illness for much of that year. His wife, Una, a nursing sister whom he met in Livingstonia, has recently returned to Malawi to continue serving there as a nurse.

Copies of African Journeys are available priced at £10 from Rev Dr Jim Campbell Tel: 028 9070 9113.
