The choir of Ekwendeni College of Nursing in Malawi has produced a CD to raise money to help build accommodation for the staff at Ekwendeni hospital. The Presbyterian Church in Ireland has close links with the hospital and college in Ekwendeni and is committed to providing support there, as well as other areas of Malawi.
Shirley Stronge, from Greenwell Street Presbyterian in Newtownards, worked at the Ekwendeni Nursing College for four and a half years and is currently on home assignment. Whilst there, she taught student nurses and midwives both in the classroom and on the wards. In 2006 PCI welcomed Mphatso Nguluwe, Deputy Principal of the college, to the Province. During her time here she studied for a Masters degree at Queen's University and also accepted a generous donation of football shirts from Barbara McNarry of the George Best Foundation. The shirts were gratefully received by the male students at the Nursing College, giving them the chance to start a college football team.
The CD is entitled Far and Near, emphasizing that support that can be given by those far away from Ekwendeni, as well as those who are nearer. With songs sung in both English and the local language, Tumbuka, the CD includes the favourites, Draw Me Closer, Far and Near and Light of the World as well as new material composed by the choir's director Rev Chimwemwe Mhango. Priced at £10, Far and Near is available from the Board of Mission Overseas in Church House, Belfast. Tel: 028 9032 2284, Email: overseas@presbyterianireland.org
