Presbyterian Moderator, Dr John Finlay has thanked Presbyterians who have "donated so generously" to the appeal for Darfur in Sudan. So far £210,000 has been raised for the appeal that was launched by former Moderator, Dr David Clarke and continued by Dr Finlay.
The money raised has been split between Christian Aid and Tearfund, organisations that are both actively involved in helping the people of Darfur. Four years after the conflict in Darfur hit the headlines, the emergency work there continues. Security has deteriorated throughout the region and the forthcoming hungry season will force even more people into desperate need.
Christian Aid is working through an alliance between Action by Churches (ACT), Caritas and a number of Sudanese partners. Through these partners Christian Aid is helping to provide locals with the most needed items - food, water and shelter. It is also supporting relief and rehabilitation work in North Darfur, providing schools and health clinics in remote areas that other agencies are unable to reach.
Tearfund has also been working in Darfur and neighbouring Chad since 2004, providing food for malnourished children, water, sanitation, seeds and tools and children's health clubs.
"We sincerely thank all those who have donated so generously to the Moderator's Appeal for Darfur," commented Dr Finlay. "We pray that this contribution might be the means of alleviating at least some of the distress and heartbreak being suffered in that area at this time."
Both Tearfund and Christian Aid have expressed their thanks to the Presbyterian Church. "The support of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland will continue to make a difference in the lives of the people of Darfur," commented margaret Boden, The Chief Executive of Christian Aid Ireland.
