The approach of the Christmas season usually promotes a rash of list making; children make lists for the guidance of Santa Claus; housewives makes lists of the foodstuff to be obtained; and all of us compile lists of those who sent cards last year, or who merit gifts this year.
I imagine that were the innkeeper in Bethlehem at the first Christmas to become a time traveller, he might cast a critical eye over our Christmas lists. He would tell us to be sure to list compassion as a Christmas essential. He himself may have had good reason to turn away the weary travellers all those centuries ago, but the impression the Bible leaves is of some heartless and uncaring. Let us not repeat his mistake, but rather strive to be welcoming to the immigrant, and generous to the needy. The collapse of the 'Farepak' company reminds us that poverty and need are never far from our doors. The BBC 'Family appeal' and the work of the Salvation Army and the St. Vincent de Paul charity deserve our support, as do those overseas charities that encourage donations towards the provision of blankets or livestock on behalf of a named friend.
Such gifts truly honour the spirit of the season, and will save us from the innkeeper's regrets. Above all, make time to worship, and to welcome the Christ child into heart and home.
May you enjoy a wonderful Christmas, and a peaceful New Year.
