Presbyterian Moderator, Dr Harry Uprichard will join with the members of McQuiston Memorial Presbyterian Church this Saturday 17 September as they celebrate the opening of their new church halls. Dr. Uprichard will officially open the halls and speak at a special service at 2.30pm. The service will be lead by the moderator of the East Belfast Presbytery Rev. Alistair Bill.
In September 2004 McQuiston Memorial Presbyterian began work on new church halls to accommodate the needs of the 550 families of the congregation. This work, costing £690,000 was prompted by a survey of the premises, which concluded that the halls needed modernisation for the growing requirements of the various groups that use them.
The new halls consist of a main and minor hall as well as several smaller meeting rooms, a purpose built youth room, and a crëche. The accommodation, which is fully equipped for disabled access also includes a kitchen and a large meeting and greeting area. These new facilities will benefit many organisations in the church, including the Lunch Club for senior citizens as well as youth organisations like the Girl Guides and Boys Brigade.
McQuiston Memorial was first established when the area itself was built up from green fields over 100 years ago. New housing developments in recent years have greatly changed the East Belfast area and brought many more people to live and work here.
"The new halls represent a great step of faith for McQuiston, as this is the first major building work the church has undertaken in over 80 years." said current minister Rev. Robert Beggs.
"In carrying out this work the congregation is seeking to make a commitment to the gospel as well as to the community around us. We are very excited about the benefits the new building will bring to the congregation and the surrounding neighbourhood and remain committed to serving Christ in this community."
