Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Uprichard and issued the following statement concerning tomorrow's (Saturday 10 September) Whiterock parade.
I am disappointed that the genuine dialogue engaged in by those involved in the Whiterock parade has been unsuccessful in satisfying both sides.
The Presbyterian Church has encouraged communities to make every effort to come to local agreement over disputed parades.
I understand that there are many concerns and worries about freedom to express culture, to achieve justice and equality and about human rights.
However the General Assembly has recognised that if local agreement cannot be reached, the Parades Commission have no alternative but to issue a lawful determination by which those who parade and those who protest must abide.
I call on all involved to express their views to one another and the authorities using only peaceful and lawful methods in order to create a climate in which meaningful dialogue should recommence.
Dr Harry Uprichard
Presbyterian Moderator.
