As the leaders of the four main Churches in Northern Ireland we have welcomed the opportunity to meet with the Secretary of State this morning.
Our discussions have ranged over a wide field of current life and we have shared our deep concerns for those in all communities who are suffering as a result of the violence at present. In particular we have expressed our abhorrence and condemnation of all sectarian-motivated attacks.
The present level of violence on our streets is totally unacceptable and on behalf of our Churches and members we condemn any words or actions which cause danger to anyone because of their religious or political identity. Attacks from any source on Churches, Schools, halls, homes, the elderly and the young cannot be justified, excused or accepted. Apart from their criminality such actions are immoral. At this tense time we appeal to everyone who has influence in this community to join with us in this condemnation, to reach out to those of different communities and to refrain from any word or action which will increase the fears so many are feeling.
There is no substitute for resolute and even-handed police action to bring to justice those who are engaged in, encouraging or assisting any form of violence at this time.
As Church leaders we again pledge ourselves to do all we can within the Churches and the wider community to build bridges of understanding in Northern Ireland. Equally we have emphasised to the Secretary of State the need for strong and fair government and the restoration of law and order on our streets.
