The Presbyterian Church has responded to the call for a three minute silence on Wednesday 5th January to remember the nations convulsed by the catastrophe in South East Asia.
The Presbyterian Church will open the Assembly Hall in its Church House headquarters in Fisherwick Place, Belfast, for three hours between 11am and 2pm for the general public and all who wish to come along to quietly reflect on the tragedy, to remember all who have suffered and their families, and pray for the continuing international relief effort.
Every 15 minutes prayers will be offered by various leaders within the Presbyterian Church and at 12 noon the Moderator Dr Ken Newell will lead all present in the three minute act of remembrance.
"People have been so emotionally effected by this catastrophe that we wanted to offer somewhere they could come for quiet, prayerful reflection and to clarify for themselves the contribution that they can make at this time," said the Moderator. "The perfect opportunity for this to be done is on Wednesday when I'm sure the whole country will continue to carry in its heart those communities in crisis in South East Asia."
Dr Newell lived and worked in Indonesia as a missionary of the Presbyterian Church in the early 70s and during the last week has been in regular contact with Church leaders in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
