The Presbyterian Church is to sell its central Belfast headquarters following a decision of its General Assembly taken today in Church House, Fisherwick Place.
In a surprisingly one sided debate lasting about an hour the 800 plus delegates decided that the building should be sold. A committee has been established with the purpose of bringing a definite proposal for the sale and resiting of Church House to the Church's General Board. No time scale for the sale and move has been specified.
Church House has stood at the junction of Howard Street and Fisherwick Place since 1905. The stonework of the listed building requires urgent repairs estimated, when added to other necessary maintenance, at £3.4m. in addition to £0.8m already spent within the last year.
Faced with this expenditure a panel was set up by the General Board of the Presbyterian Church to advise on ''all matters relating to Church House and Fisherwick Buildings'.
Its report, agreed by the Assembly today, recommended the sale of Church House with various suggestions as to where a 'new' headquarters could be situated in the city or along the M1-M2 corridor.
