Voting For Moderator Designate Is Tied

For the second year in succession the election for the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church has resulted in a tied vote between Rev Ken Newell and Dr Harry Uprichard.

Dr Uprichard, minister of Trinity, Ahoghill and Mr Newell of the Fitzroy congregation in Belfast each received 10 nominations from the 21 presbyteries who met today throughout Ireland to vote for a successor to present Moderator Dr Ivan McKay.

Under the rules of the Presbyterian Church presbyteries will vote on just the two names at their next meetings on Tuesday 2 March to see who will take over as Moderator from Dr McKay who continues in office until 7 June, 2004

The other minister to receive a nomination was Rev Alistair Kennedy of the Trinity congregation in Bangor.

The voting for each candidate was as follows:

Rev Ken Newell (Fitzroy) 10 Votes
Ards, North Belfast, East Belfast, South Belfast, Carrickfergus, Donegal, Down, Dromore, Dublin/Munster, Templepatrick.

Dr Harry Uprichard (Trinity, Ahoghill) 10 Votes
Armagh, Ballymena, Coleraine, Derry/Strabane, Foyle, Iveagh, Newry, Omagh, Route, Tyrone.

Rev Alistair Kennedy (Trinity, Bangor) 1 Vote
Monaghan.
