As is traditional, at its ceremony to mark the end of the academic year, Union Theological College in Belfast is to award honorary doctorates to two ministers of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
This Friday, 9 May at 7.00pm in Fisherwick Presbyterian Church, Malone Road, Belfast, Doctor of Divinity degrees will be conferred on Rev Joseph Thompson and the Moderator Designate of the Presbyterian Church, Rev Ivan McKay.
Dr Thompson has recently retired as minister of the Mall Presbyterian Church in Armagh. He is regarded by many as an authority on the history of the Irish Presbyterian Church and more generally on Irish Presbyterianism. In conferring this doctorate the College is acknowledging his contribution to the study of church history and his popularising of the subject to a wider audience.
Also at the ceremony five students will be awarded their Post Graduate Diplomas in Ministry. This marks the official end of their academic studies for the Presbyterian Ministry and they will now begin two years assisting another minister before being called to a congregation of their own and ordination.
