Presbyterian Women 'On The Move'

3000 Presbyterian women from all over Ireland are gathering in Presbyterian headquarters at Church House, Fisherwick Place, Belfast, on Thursday 8 May at 2.30pm and 7.30pm for the Annual Meeting of the Presbyterian Woman's Association (PWA) which takes as its theme 'On the Move.'

'People are constantly on the move,' explains Margaret Myers, PWA Executive Secretary, 'and through our theme this year we want to encourage PWA members to be 'on the move' towards God (drawing closer to Him) and for God (reaching out to others with His love).'

And projects to be helped by PWA in the forthcoming year reflect the 'on the move' theme as well. Overseas, they will support two communications programmes. Help will be given to CLAIM, a programme of Christian literature distribution in Malawi and to MEGAVOICE, an initiative of the Bible Society, which provides a small, inexpensive and reliable solar powered computer device which allows people to listen to God's word in their own language. At home the PWA will assist in the furnishing of a worship room at Corkey House, a new home for elderly people in Belfast where residents are expected to move in during the autumn.

Presbyterian Moderator, Dr Russell Birney will be main speaker at both meetings addressing how PWA members can be 'On the Move' for God and reflecting on his recent visit to Malawi. During March he travelled to the central African state and met with all the Presbyterian overseas personnel serving there. He also saw famine relief programmes supported by Presbyterians through a church wide appeal last year which raised £0.27m, and how Christians in Malawi are responding to the AIDS pandemic.

The Annual Meeting with representatives from around 500 PWA branches from all over Ireland will also welcome Mrs Zoe Vallely from Ballylinney as Central President in succession to Mrs Maureen Patterson from Newcastle who has come to the end of her two year term of office. Mrs Helen Murdock from the Abbey congregation in Monkstown will succeed Mrs Valley as Home Vice-President.
