Moderator Dr Russell Birney has given a 'cautious welcome' to last week's declaration of 'military inactivity' by the UDA describing it as a 'move in the right direction'. However the Moderator warns that 'time will tell how significant this declaration proves to be.'
"The declaration of 'military inactivtity' by the UDA can be accorded a very cautious welcome," commented the Moderator. "This in no way should be interpreted as toleration of their past activities or their other current activities.
"Factions of the UDA have long been involved in bombing, drug dealing, prostitution and extortion. Any move in the right direction is welcome. Time will tell how significant this declaration proves to be and if the UDA is capable of significant change."
