This Thursday, 16 January, Presbyterian Moderator Dr Russell Birney will visit social action projects in Belfast undertaken by the Presbyterian Church through its Board of Social Witness.
Dr Birney's first visit will be to Corkey House, a residential home for 21 elderly people on the Ballygomartin Road. The home is one of nine residential projects run by the Presbyterian Residential Trust throughout Ireland. After meeting residents Dr Birney will then see progress on the new Corkey House which is being build about half a mile away and which it is hoped will be opened in October this year.
Dr Birney's next call will be to Thompson House, a hostel for ex-offenders in North Belfast, which for the last 14 years has provided bed-sit accommodation for men who need supported housing when they leaving prison.
Staying in North Belfast the Moderator will also visit Carlise House where the Presbyterian Church operates a rehabilitation programme for people who have become dependent on alcohol or drugs. During the last 8 years around 750 men and women have attended the eight week programmes.
After lunch the focus moves to South Belfast when the Moderator visits Derryvolgie Hall which provides modern, first-class accommodation for around 90 young people who come to Belfast to work or study.
Dr Birney's day will finish when he visits the Kinghan Church at Botanic Avenue, to see at first hand the ministry extended to the deaf community through the work of Dr George Grindle and Rev Simon Henning.
