'Create a Society We Can All Be Proud Of' Urges Moderator in Christmas Message

This year at Christmas time there is once again turmoil around the world. Religious terrorism with its total disregard for human life casts a huge shadow. War clouds are gathering over Iraq. Famine and AIDS devastate the countries of southern Africa. Hatred and hunger have displaced millions who are now refugees.

By comparison our lot is a much easier one. Many still suffer from the effects of our recent conflict. However, the terrorism that brought suffering and death to many homes at Christmas has thankfully ended.

The one major disappointment is that we have not yet managed to devise a method of governing ourselves that is acceptable to all. Consequently, the future is uncertain. Let us be thankful for the distance we have come and be determined to press on to create a society that we can all be rightly proud of. Our goal must be a society which is just and fair for all.

The virtues of faith, hope and love are three inseparable companions throughout the Bible. They are also present in the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.

As we celebrate Christmas this year we need to be people of faith. God has not abandoned his world or this small tract of land, which we call home. Have faith in each other and also earn the right of others' faith.

The baby in the manger represented hope for all mankind, he still does. It is He who is the hope of the nations.

Finally, and in particular, love was present, the love of God for the world. I am greatly encouraged by the practical love shown by thousands in Ireland not only for those around them but also for the suffering peoples of the world.

The Christ child was also the Prince of Peace. May I wish you peace this Christmas, peace in our world, in our country and in our hearts.

Rt Rev Dr Russell I. Birney. Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
