Escape The Summer Sofa

Escape the sofa, find the fun and find Jesus is the challenge on offer form the Youth Board of the Presbyterian Church at its nine summer camps that will run during July and August at venues all around Ireland and which are expected to attract over 1000 young people.

So if it's surfing, canoeing, singing, dancing football, writing, playing music, or just talking, listening and thinking there is something for just about everyone at one of the camps that will held mostly at the Presbyterian Church's Youth centres at Castlerock, Rostrevor and Lucan.

"It's the summer time and young people and the Youth Board want to have fun!" says Roz Stirling, Youth Officer of the Presbyterian Church. "We promise campers the time of their lives not just through the many physical activities they get the opportunity to do but in a spiritual way too as they discover who Jesus really is and the lasting fun that he can bring to their lives."

Longest running of all the Presbyterian camps and still one of the most popular is the canvas camp at Castlerock. For over seventy years that has attracted campers to the north coast and this year around 150 boys are expected to get involved in a week of sporting activity and adventure run by a group of 30 leaders together with a chaplaincy team of four ministers.

During the week over 20 different activities and sports for the campers to get involved in have been planned. There is something for everyone from football to fishing - superstars to gladiators. Also it gives the opportunity to introduce the campers to Jesus Christ in a way that shows what he has to offer is vital to them and their lives.

Newest camp is the creative arts camp at Rostrevor which will give opportunities for drama, writing poetry and prose, and developing musical talent. 'To attend, you don't need to be brilliantly creative already, but just interested and open to learn and keen to discover what God has to say about our creative side, and how to use it for the benefit of the church and those around us,' says Roz Stirling.

Further information about any of the camps can be found by contacting the Presbyterian Church Youth Board, Tel 028 9032 2284.
