Over 200 young Presbyterians will be commissioned by Moderator Dr Russell Birney for summer outreach work in a special service to be held in Ballyhenry Presbyterian Church, Glengormly, this Saturday evening, 22 June, at 7.00pm.
The young people will be travelling all over Ireland and the world to get involved in social action projects, schools programmes, holiday bible clubs, street evangelism and youth programmes.
Travelling furthest will be individuals supported by the Concorde Fund, a grant that is available from the Presbyterian Church to those who wish to travel overseas to be involved for a short time in Christian projects. People supported by this scheme are visiting a range of countries including Kenya, Brazil, Ecuador, South Africa and Cambodia.
Closer to home, also being commissioned at the same service, are the leaders of Presbyterian run camps at the church's three youth centres at Lucan, Castlerock and Rostrevor. Over 400 young people are expected to attend nine camps being held during the summer which will focus on activities as diverse as surfing and water sports, soccer, adventure and creative arts, alongside study of their Christian faith.
By far the greatest number being commissioned are the members of the 11 summer outreach teams that will be based in places as diverse as Portlaoise and Kilcooley, Woodvale and Newry. However in each location their mission will be the same, to work alongside local congregations helping them in their outreach to the community and undertaking all sorts of activities including street theatre, running holiday bible clubs, organising video bars and most of all making the Christian message heard above all the other summer activities.
Moderator Dr Russell Birney, who will commission the young people and conduct the service along with Presbyterian Youth officer Roz Stirling and Youth Board Convener Rev James Hyndman commented, "Numerous opportunities are presented to young people nowadays and I'm delighted that so many of them have chosen to spend some part of their summer serving God and taking part in these exciting programmes. I'm pleased too that our church has the vision to resource these activities which I know the many local congregations and individuals who benefit from them appreciate greatly."
