Foundation Stone To Be Laid At Burnt Out Church

Tonight, Wednesday 8 May at 7.30pm, the foundation stone will be laid on a new church building to replace one destroyed by fire just under a year ago.

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Alastair Dunlop will carry out the ceremony at a service to be held on the site of Newmills Presbyterian Church which was destroyed by fire on 5 June 2001.

Dr Dunlop was scheduled to visit Newmills last June to open an extension to the church. Instead he found himself attending the scene of a fire and commiserating with the congregation and their minister Rev Gordon Best.

However while the rest of the building was totally destroyed the new extension was largely undamaged and the new church is being built around the extension. The steelwork is already in place and it is hoped the church will open within the next 12 months.

Since the fire the congregation have worshipped in the church hall which was undamaged by the fire.
