Moderator To Open £70,000 Hall Refurbishment At Kilmore

After visits to Nepal and India, Presbyterian Moderator Dr Alastair Dunlop returns to his local beat on Sunday when he visits the rural Co Down congregation of Kilmore to dedicate the congregation's church hall which has been recently renovated at a cost of £70,000.

Dr Dunlop's visit takes on added significance as the rededication ceremony is being combined with the congregation's annual PWA/YWG Service. During the service, organised by the combined Presbyterian Women's Association/Young Women's Group in the congregation under their President Mrs Elizabeth Abernethy, the Moderator will take the opportunity to report first hand about what he experienced during his recent overseas visit. In particular he is likely to focus on the situation in the Gujarat region of India following last year's earthquake and the more recent violence in the area.

"We are delighted that the Moderator is coming to Kilmore," says the congregation's minister Rev Drew Abernethy. 'His recollections of his overseas visit will bring added significance to our PWA/YWG Service and his presence to dedicated our refurbished halls also marks what has been a very important time in the life of the congregation."

Faced with badly needed repairs to their existing hall, the small congregation of some 130 families situated between Crossgar and Ballynahinch embarked on a major renovation programme to provide the facilities needed for the many activities that run alongside Sunday services in Kilmore.

The refurbished halls feature a fully carpeted minor hall, a new church office, upgraded kitchen and toilet facilities and improved facilities for people with disability.

"Through the generosity of our own congregation and other local people I'm delighted that we have been able to carry out these renovations,' added Mr Abernethy. 'Faced with a building programme of this size everyone has worked hard to provide our new accommodation and we all are looking forward to continuing our work and witness in these new surroundings."

NOTE TO EDITORS: The Moderator and members of the congregation will be available for photographs at 10.15am. Arrangements should be made with Rev Drew Abernethy Tel: 028 4483 0201
