Good Friday Services Around The Cross

The central message of Easter, the death and resurrection of Christ on the Cross, is being publicly displayed across Belfast this Good Friday (March 29th 2002) when members of several Presbyterian congregations join with other Christians in public acts of witness.

At 11.15am members of Cooke Centenary Presbyterian will join with other Protestant and Catholic church members in their Easter Witness in Ormeau Park, opposite the Candahar Street entrance. Worshippers will gather around a 9 foot high cross for a time of Easter reflection conducted by local ministers from the Ballynafeigh Clergy Fellowship. Singing will be accompanied by a silver band and a cross community praise group. After readings and prayers, the worshippers will process behind the cross to nearby Cooke Centenary Church, Ormeau Rd (opp. Bakery) where there will be a short service at 11.45am. Commenting on the event, Rev Marlene Taylor, secretary of the Ballynafeigh Fellowship said:

"We will be seen by people coming and going on the Ormeau Road, so we want to show that people can unite around the death and resurrection of Jesus together. It's a signal to the people of the area that we worship together as Christians and we stand together as a community on the Ormeau Road."

(Clergy will be available for interview from 11.05am in the park and filming is allowed in the church until the end of the first hymn.)

On Good Friday evening, churches in the east of the City will engage in a similar demonstration of faith, as Knocknagoney Church of Ireland and Garnerville Presbyterian join at the Anglican church at 7pm. From there they will proceed to Garnerville Church through the local housing estate carrying a wooden cross. Rev Rick Hill and Rev David Brown will take part in a short service for the local community at Garnerville Church.
