No, not a quote from local retailers, but the name of an event taking place on Friday night, attracting over seven hundred teenagers. TGI Christmas is a one off party organized by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland Youth Board, involving music, festive drama as well as a 300-a-side game of volleyball! The massive game takes place in the Assembly Buildings, Fisherwick Place, after 7.30pm.
This ridiculously large volleyball match is part of a broader plan to help Columbian young people get a better start to life. Tim McGowan one of the organizers, describes why the massive game will take place:
"We want to get Presbyterian young people to help teenagers in Columbia. At TGI Christmas we will use the massive volleyball game to encourage youth groups to get involved in fundraising sports games throughout the year. These events will raise money for teenagers in Columbia, who will receive job training, personal development and resources for sporting activity.
Many of these teenagers are misplaced because of the Columbian civil war and consequently fall prey to the drug cartels. If even 50 Presbyterian youth groups raised just £100 each as a result of this initiative, it would enable over 100 teenagers in Columbia to have a better chance in life. We feel that Friday night's event is an excellent opportunity to remind young people at home that Christmas is as much about giving as well as receiving. By having fun through sport over here, we can make a real difference to teenage lives in Columbia."
