Opportunity To Move Forward

The Conveners of the Presbyterian Church and Government Committee have issued the following response to yesterday's statement by Gerry Adams:

"It is our belief that IRA violence and the threat of it have been the single greatest impediment to peace on this island.

"We should never lose sight of the necessity of creating a settled but diverse society in which people from different parts of the community can participate and feel at home.

"We have said that the decommissioning of weapons by loyalists and republicans is a crucial step in helping to bring that about and in preventing a slide back into anarchy.

"We agree with Gerry Adams that there is an opportunity to move forward to a better future. We welcome his statement that his objective is to replace conflict and strife with genuine partnership and equality.

"The overdue resolution of the decommissioning issue will greatly assist in that endeavour and will instil a necessary degree of confidence in the political process."
