Training For Teachers -- New Sunday School Materials

As congregations prepare to commence with a new term of activity, the Sunday School Office of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland have published a series of fresh Teacher's Guides for use throughout the denomination.

An initial set of four guides have been produced for this September, covering church topics from a distinctive Presbyterian point of view. The subject areas include 'Baptism,' 'Communion,' 'Children and Young People' and 'Leadership.' Published in A4 booklet format, the Guides are suitable for use with four age ranges, namely Key Stages 1-4. During the course of the next year it is hoped that further titles will be published, among them; Evangelism, Our Church, Mission, Worship and Family Matters.

Sunday School Organiser Rev Ian McKee compiled the Guides. He comments: "In previous years our church published four lessons a year which focused on our church's life, but we found that some facts and figures became outdated very quickly, which gave the material a short life span. In their place we have these new Teacher's Guides, in a new revised, more attractive format. They contain advice and lessons written in a straightforward, uncomplicated way. This is most important - sometimes even seasoned teachers can struggle with questions of our faith! We believe it is essential therefore that materials are available with which our young members can receive clear teaching on issues such as baptism or communion. I'm thankful that the General Assembly has backed their production and hope that the wider church avail of these new resources."

Each Teacher's Guide, approximately 20 pages long, contains four lessons for the different age groups, with worksheets which can be photocopied. Priced at £2 or 3 Euros each plus postage, they are available from the Sunday School Office, Church House, Belfast.
