Presbyterians Get Their Kicks -- On Route 66

Younger members of the Presbyterian Church from across Ireland are set for four days of down to earth Bible teaching at the unique 'Route 66' conference, Loughry College, 23rd 27th August 2001.

Now in it's third year, Route 66 has proven one of the most successful Bible teaching events organized by a church youth organization in Northern Ireland, with it's combination of gifted Bible teachers, open exchange of ideas and emphasis on informality.

Route 66 is so named because it takes participants on a four day journey through the 66 books of the Bible. Leading the journey this year will be Dr Gordon Hugenberger from the United States, along with local Presbyterian University Chaplain Dr William Crawley. Gordon is minister of Park Street Church, Boston, which has a strategic ministry in that city, particularly to students. He is also part time lecturer at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. William is based at Jordanstown, but also lectures at the Institute of Theology, Queens University, Belfast and has spoken at Route 66 before.

Each day in 'workshops' various 'bends' are negotiated through the Bible, which this year includes Leviticus, Ruth, Ezekiel, John and 1 Corinthians. There will be studies on how to read the Scriptures more effectively and how to apply Biblical truth to contemporary issues. Ample time however, will be spared for the sports field during the afternoons and in the Route 66 café at night. Rev Andrew Smith, minister of Dun Laoghaire is part of the Route 66 working group. He comments:

"Many in our denomination are concerned at the increasing lack of knowledge of Scripture amongst Christians, young and old alike. If we do not know our Bibles we cannot know the God of the Bible. With Route 66 the Youth Board has sought to make a serious effort to address the challenge."

Route 66 is the first of several events planned by the Youth Board for the forthcoming new term. "Starting As A Student" , the popular advice day for new third level students takes place on Saturday 8th September.
