The annual Guysmere Boys Camp organised by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland Youth Board commences this weekend, Friday 6th July 2001 at Guysmere Camp, Castlerock, Co Londonderry. Over 150 boys, mainly teenagers, take part in the Camp, which combines leisure activity with spiritual teaching and finishes next Friday 13th July. Presbyterian Moderator Dr Alistair Dunlop pays his first 'official' visit this Sunday morning, as he joins with the camp in worship at Castlerock Presbyterian Church, 9.45am. Dr Dunlop will then be invited for lunch with the boys at 1pm.
Daily programmes commence at 7.45am including visits to local attractions, arts and crafts, quizzes, expeditions and walks. The emphasis is on having good fun, building friendships and presenting Biblical truths to the young men who are drawn from congregations across Ireland, north and south.
Guysmere Camp is conveniently situated by the picturesque Castlerock strand. A tradition at the Camp now in its seventy second year, is the end of evening swim, which takes place despite the chilly temperatures! In recent years some of the more sporting boys have even been known to surf and 'bodyboard' the Atlantic waters.
Instructing and organising the boys is a leadership team of thirty, together with a chaplaincy team of four ministers, led by Rev Phillip McCrea minister of Maghera Presbyterian Church. He comments:
"It's difficult to find the energy levels for this week of fun, the boys can be very demanding. But it is extremely rewarding work and we find real satisfaction as we seek to demonstrate the Gospel not only by our words but by example as well."
