Building Starts On Supported Housing Programme For People With Learning Disability

This Tuesday, May 29 at 2.00pm, Presbyterian Moderator Dr Trevor Morrow will lay the foundation stone on the site of a new Presbyterian initiative to provide a supported housing scheme for people with learning disability.

Situated in Coleraine at 12 Millburn Road, this exciting and innovative scheme will provide housing for 9 people and consists of one four bedroom unit, a three bedroom unit and three single person homes.

It will operate under a joint management agreement between the Presbyterian Church's Board of Social Witness and Oaklee Housing Association. Oaklee will be responsible for the building and its maintenance while the Board of Social Witness will manage the service provided for residents.

The Causeway Health and Social Services Trust and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive have approved the development and the Trust has included the scheme as part of its strategic development for the area.

'For some time the Church has been conscious of the need to find ways of ministering to the spiritual needs of people with learning disability,' says Rev Jim Waring, convener of the Presbyterian Committee on Learning Disability. 'The principle of this scheme is to maximise and to encourage independent living within a Christian environment, whilst emphasising a person's right to privacy and respecting their dignity.'
