John Dunlop Returns To Jamaica

This Sunday, 6 May, Presbyterian minister Dr John Dunlop will be preaching in Jamaica, as part of celebrations marking 60 years work and witness of the Webster Memorial United congregation in Kingston .

It is often forgotten that the Newry born minister served with the Overseas Board of the Presbyterian Church ministering in Jamaica for ten years from 1968 until 1978 before returning to Rosemary Presbyterian Church in North Belfast

'I was a minister with the United Church of Jamaica and Cayman Islands,' explained Dr Dunlop. 'My first congregation was at Mount Hermon in the west of Jamaica and then in 1971, I succeeded Rev David Lapsley as minister of Webster Memorial United Church in Kingston.'

In his first visit back to Kingston since 1988 Dr Dunlop is looking forward to meeting many friends and seeing the changes that have taken place. 'Since my time there the church has doubled in size,' says Dr Dunlop. 'That is a great joy to me as is being invited to take part in the anniversary celebrations with Rev Oliver Daly, a Jamaican who succeeded me as the minister of Webster.'

The following Sunday, 13 May, will bring back even more memories for Dr Dunlop as he will preach at the Mount Hermon church, exactly 30 years to the month since he left in 1971.
