Up to the end of March, Presbyterians throughout Ireland have donated an amazing £641,787 to the Church's Indian Earthquake Appeal.
Some of this money was immediately transferred to the Church of North India, a partner of the Presbyterian Church, to help provide food, clothing, cooking utensils, clean water and shelter for the homeless. The greater part is being held at the Church of North India's request until they have decided how best to use it in longer-term projects aimed at 'rebuilding' for the future.
Bishop Vinod Malaviya and members of the church expressed their gratitude for this magnificent response directly to the Moderator during his recent visit to Gujarat.
'This wonderful response expresses the deep concern felt by so many in our Church for the suffering people of Gujarat,' said the Moderator. 'Everyone I met in India expressed their appreciation, particularly those living in Bhuj and the surrounding district, who were at the epicentre of the quake and have suffered greatly. I would ask everyone to continue to pray regularly for the people of Gujarat in the huge challenge they face in rebuilding their communities and in trying to get back to normal.'
