Church Announces Day Of Prayer For Farm Crisis

Congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland are being urged to set aside Palm Sunday 8th April, as a special day of prayer for individuals and communities affected by Foot and Mouth disease. In a resolution agreed by the Presbyterian Church General Board, churches will be asked to pray that "God would grant wisdom to those who must take difficult decisions" as a result of the crisis.

At Thursday's (5th April) meeting the General Board noted that anxiety and stress is causing "real heartbreak" to those who have suffered as a result of the "virulent epidemic." The General Board also noted the disasterous impact that Foot and Mouth was having on tourism and small business in the countryside. The full text of the resolution reads:

"Congregations are asked to use Palm Sunday 8th April 2001 as a special day of prayer for members of the farming community, government ministers, officials and veterinary surgeons in the Department of Agriculture, business associated with the farming industry and those involved in tourism, that God may grant wisdom to those who must take difficult decisions and grace and encouragement to those who are anxious and distressed by what is happening to them, their families and their livelihoods as well as their livestock, their farms and their businesses."
