Ordained Ministry 'Challenge' To Church

The challenge of ordained ministry is being presented to members of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland at a special Open Day to be held next month. Organised by the Director of Ministerial Studies, Rev Harry Robinson, the Open Day takes place in Wednesday the 11th April 2001, at Union College, Botanic Avenue, Belfast, 10.30am - 3.15pm.

Numbers applying for the Presbyterian ministry have dipped slightly over the last couple of years, after several years of 'over supply'. Harry Robinson explains; "As a church we experience an ebb and flow in terms of ministry applicants. Some years we have more applicants than vacant churches available, other years not. As it stands we need around 20 applicants a year for the foreseeable future and maybe more than that if we are to extend our work to meet modern needs."

Potential ministers are being asked to think of the vocation as a 'challenge' which is 'tough, but life changing and rewarding.' Those in attendance during the Open Day will get an opportunity to talk with theological teachers, practicing ministers and current students. The programme also includes seminars on 'Clarifying a Sense of Call', 'The Making of a Minister', and 'The Many Sides of Ministry' with a closing address by the Moderator Dr Trevor Morrow.

Harry Robinson continues, "This Open Day will give anyone interested a real chance to find out more about a career in the ministry. But I would want to emphasize ministry application is a long process which requires a lot of thought, so I encourage anyone interested at this stage to come along on April 11th."
