All Square For Bangor Church

A Presbyterian congregation have launched a unique community based project in Bangor this week. Kilcooley Presbyterian Church, situated in the heart of Kilcooley Estate, opened up the "Square Centre", during a special service last Tuesday morning attended by the Moderator, Dr Trevor Morrow. Local council representatives including North Down Mayor, Councillor Alan Chambers, were also present at the opening ceremony.

The Square Centre was formerly an old butcher's premises situated in the shopping centre, merely fifty yards from Kilcooley Presbyterian Church. It will be used as a 'drop in' centre, meeting place for local community groups, or as a facility for other organisations in the estate.

Much of the thinking behind the Square Centre has come from Deaconess Jenny Robinson, who has served with Kilcooley Church for the last year. Jenny sought inspiration from other projects in Belfast such as "Friendship House" where local Presbyterians have been able to practically help the local community in various ways. Even at this early stage Jenny has been able to work closely with a Women's Education Group in Kilcooley Estate who will be using the Square Centre facility.

Most of the work done in the Square has been on a voluntary basis by members of the church. The project has been assisted by the Housing Executive, who have granted a three year lease on the Square premises. Minister of Kilcooley Dr Stuart Jones comments:

"The Square Centre represents a real attempt by our congregation to demonstrate Christian love and support to the local community. It will be greatly used by groups attached to Kilcooley Church, but it is also a place to be very much used by other people in the estate who need somewhere to meet.
