The Director of the Presbyterian Church Christian Training Centre, Belfast, has co-edited a signifigant theological work recently launched onto the world market. Dr Desmond Alexander, a member of Fitzroy Presbyterian Church, co-edited the New Dictionary of Biblical Theology with Dr Brian Rosner, formerly of Aberdeen University.
Published by Inter Varsity Press, the eight hundred and sixty six page hardback is aimed at scholars, students and ministers who seek to understand the different parts of the Bible in relation to the whole framework of Scripture. The Dictionary is written by an international team of one hundred and twenty five scholars drawn from five continents.
Dr Alexander comments, "In recent years our knowledge of the individual parts of the Bible has increased greatly, but our understanding of how they fit together has not kept pace. In particular, the relationship between the Old and New Testaments has been a neglected field of study. The aim of this Dictionary is to integrate the different parts and themes of the Bible into the overarching message of what God is saying to humanity."
Many of the contributors to the New Dictionary of Biblical Theology are well known preachers or teachers in their own right, including award winning Canadian academic Dr DA Carson and Dr JI Packer of Regents College, Vancouver. Several of the writers are based in Ireland, including Professor Stephen Williams, Union Theological College and Dr Ian Hart, minister of Great Victoria Street Presbyterian, Belfast. Dr Alexander continues, "I am honoured to have been so involved in the editing of this Dictionary and hope that it will be of real use to serious students of the Bible. It has been a long but enjoyable process of five years in the making, so it is satisfying to see the book available to the public at last."
