Moderator Visits Omagh

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Trevor Morrow will spend two days visiting a variety of different organisations in the Omagh area, commencing this Sunday, 3rd December 2000.

On Sunday morning Dr Morrow will bring the greetings of the General Assembly to the small church of Gilligooley, on the outskirts of the County Tyrone town. The service begins at 10.00 am. Following this visit, the Moderator moves quickly into Omagh town centre where he joins Trinity Presbyterian Church for their act of morning worship at 11.30am. Trinity and Gillygooley congregations have shared a minister since 1928 but have only been united as a 'joint charge' since 1970.

On Monday morning Dr Morrow will be visiting the Bridge Centre, Campsie Road at 10am. Run by the Sperrin Lakeland Trust, the Bridge Centre was established after the Omagh bombing to provide support to local people who have been stressed and traumatised by the tragedy. The centre provides a range of therapies and services.

During Monday afternoon the Moderator will get an opportunity to hear of work done by Christians of other denominations as he visits the Omagh Churches Forum, meeting at Omagh District Council, 3pm. The inter-church group meets on a regular basis to foster co-operation between churches in the west Tyrone town and district. Rev Robert Herron, minister of Trinity and Gilligooley Presbyterian Churches, is secretary of the Forum.

"I know of Trevor's commitment to greater understanding amongst Christians across the island of Ireland. I'd like to think that in a modest way, we in Omagh have tried to set an example for others to follow. We know that Trevor will enjoy his time with us and we look forward to hearing his vision for the future of both the Presbyterian church and the broader Kingdom of God in Ireland."
