One Day Of Advice For A Life Time's Experience

Fast food, fast life style, even faster finances and a new term fast approaching - just three of many things first time students will have to come terms with in a short space of time. But as prospective students pack their bags in anticipation of three or more years away from home, helpful advice is at hand from a group of church youth organisations in Belfast.

"Starting As A Student" is a fact filled day of tips and information designed to give 'freshers' solid guidance on the exciting, occassionally traumatic, terms ahead of them. It has been organised by the Presbyterian Youth Board in partnership with the Methodist, Baptist, Anglican Youth organisations alongside student body IFES Ireland and will take place in the Assembly Buildings, Saturday 9th September 2000.

A wide range of speakers will be available to offer help with varied aspects of student living, including financial advisor June Andrews, chef Peter Douglas and Rick Johnston who will look at how 'modular' systems of teaching result in more disciplined study by students.

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Trevor Morrow will be on hand to discuss the various issues which young Christians are likely to face as they socially mix in a hedonistic student culture. Dean of Derryvolgie Halls Rev Steve Stockman also contributes with a session on developing long term friendships that last through the university years and beyond.

Roz Stirling from the Presbyterian Church Youth Board comments:

"I think many young people, especially, but certainly not exclusively Christians, feel bewildered by the first few months, even the first year of University life. We hope Starting as a Student really puts their forthcoming experience on the right footing. After all, they only have a matter of days to prepare for their first day."

Tickets costing £7.50 available from the Youth Office, Church House, Belfast. Packed lunch required. Tea/coffee provided.
