Thousands of young Presbyterians across Ireland will be participating in a new educational project which will focus on innovative church work in Monaghan, Africa and North Belfast.
The "Same Sky Project" is a year long joint initiative of the Sunday School Office and Youth Board of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. It will involve work sheets, videos, slides and tapes which aim to raise both awareness and much needed funds from church based youth organisations.
Of primary benefit will be the Presbyterian Church in East Africa (PCEA) who are hoping to construct a purpose built Children and Youth centre in Nairobi, Kenya. It is hoped that the Centre will be used by organisations such as the Boys and Girls Brigade in Kenya as well as a training base for leadership, evangelism and broader sports related activities for the PCEA.
Nearer home, the Same Sky Project also supports the development of the "Loft" - an innovative youth centre serving young people across Cavan and Monaghan. Based in Ballybay, the Loft is a meeting place for younger adults across the border counties who wish to meet in an informal atmosphere and learn more about God. The leadership of the Loft hope to build on their current facility in Ballybay to meet their expanding ministry and training needs.
The 174 Trust in North Belfast is the final beneficiary of the Same Sky project. Situated on the Antrim Road, the 174 Trust is a Christian based community development organisation which seeks to address the needs of disadvantaged communities on the North Belfast area. The Same Sky project will be specifically funding a pre - school play group which includes provision for special needs and a juinour Phab club.
Sunday School organiser Rev Ian McKee says: "The Same Sky Project really will help young members of our congregtions understand more about the work of the broader church beyond the confines of thier own area. It should also be a lot fun, culminating in our popular Fun Day on Saturday 19th May 2001 at Cultra."
