President To Attend General Assembly

The President of Ireland, Mrs Mary McAleese has accepted an invitation to attend the opening meeting of the Presbyterian General Assembly at 7.00pm on Monday 5 June 2000 in the Assembly Hall, Church House, Belfast.

At the opening meeting Rev Dr Trevor Morrow, minister of Lucan Presbyterian Church outside Dublin will be installed as the Moderator of the General Assembly, the first Moderator to come from a congregation in the Republic of Ireland since Rev James Park of the old Kingstown congregation 36 years ago in 1964.

Dr Morrow is delighted that the President will be attending the Assembly. 'When I was nominated as Moderator I considered it an honour not just for the Lucan congregation but the whole Presbyterian community in the Republic and I'm delighted that the President can share in this honour as well.'

This will be the first time that the President of Ireland has attended the General Assembly in Belfast though on previous occasions when the Assembly was held in Dublin President Mary Robinson and President Eamon DeValera both accepted invitations to be present.

As is customary when the Assembly meets in Belfast the Lord Lieutenant will also be present at the opening meeting.
