A renewed emphasis on the importance of worship during the meetings of the General Assembly will be in evidence when the Millennium Assembly meets in Belfast from June 5 until June 9.
As part of its celebrations of the Millennium it was agreed that the mid-day worship sessions of the Assembly should be extended by 15 minutes and that delegates should be encouraged to stay in the 'house ' for these times of prayer and praise. As always they are open not only to Assembly members but to the general public as well.'
'Part of our Assembly is to transact the business necessary for the functioning of our Church,' says Moderator Designate Dr Trevor Morrow. 'However it is vital that we also come together in praise, thanksgiving and prayer and I would encourage everyone to come to what we have organised as vibrant, exciting and challenging times of worship.'
Main speaker at the midday worship which takes place between 12noon and 1pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, June 7,8,9, will be Dr Leighton Ford. A renowned international speaker, Dr Ford is a brother in law of American evangelist Dr Billy Graham and a minister of the Presbyterian Church in the USA. He will speak on the themes of the Love of the Father, the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
The worship will be conducted by Dr Russell Birney and the praise will be lead by musicians from the 2020 Orchestra, a group of musicians formed after the Presbyterian 2020 Vision conference in Coleraine in 1997. Each time of worship will conclude with Dr Morrow responding to Dr Ford's address in the light of his moderatorial theme - 'Jesus for the twenty first century.'
Leighton Ford will also be the main speaker at the Assembly Rally to be held on the Wednesday evening of Assembly week, 7 June, at 7.45pm in the Assembly Hall.
