Presbyterian minister, broadcaster and some time writer, Rev Steve Stockman launches a new book of poetry on Wednesday night, 5th April. It takes place in Fisherwick Presbyterian Church, Belfast, starting at 7.30pm.
Admission might be seem a bit sharp at £10, but concert goers get a free copy of "Dare", the latest collection of poetry from 'Stocki', with all profits going to Habitat for Humanity. (Other guests on the night include award winning singer Juliet Turner, Brian Houston and Booley.)
Steve stockman calls his poetry "pop poetry with a provocative punch". He takes birth, life, love and death and gives it a spiritual twist, wrapped in memorable rhyme. Steve has read his poetry on videos both here and in the us, has had it featured on cd and magazine as well as having sold some 5000 of his 4 collections. As a minister working in a student community at queen's, a broadcaster and editor of the music magazine 'juice' he gets little chance to perform. Wednesday will be a unique opportunity to hear new poems and also one of the first performances of a new project he's working on with lancastrian songwriter sam hill.
Stocki intends to lead a group of mainly Presbyterian students to South Africa this summer to take part in a building project. The Dean of Derryvolgie Halls at Queens University has gone to some bizarre lengths in raising funds for the trip - last December he had his flowing locks of hair completely shaved off in front of a thousand roaring teenagers at a Presbyterian youth event.
Brian Houston's songs like Jesus Again and Treat A Woman have been regularly played on local radio and tv. He has headlined the Waterfront Hall and has led worship events worldwide.
Juliet Turner was nominated for Hot Press Irish singer of the year last year with Sinead O'Connor, Andrea Corr and Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries. Recently she dueted on a single with Brian Kennedy and her new album is due out soon. Booley have just toured the UK with Maire Brennan and their great Bathroom Floor album will be released to the mainstream market in June.
