Moderator Attends Traditional Fisherman's Service

Following his visit to the Foyle Presbytery last week, Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Lockington travels to a different part of the Ulster coastline this Sunday, 13th February. Dr Lockington visits the County Down coastal village of Annalong where he will be taking part in a special "Fisherman's Service" in Annalong Presbyterian church, 11.30am.

Most local churches host a traditional Fisherman's Service in the area, but this will be Dr Lockington's first opportunity to take part in one. Annalong church will be decorated specially for the occassion and the church choir will sing appropriate praise items during the service.

Traditionally the church has always had a close link with the fishing community in the area, as the congregation has sought to provide spiritual strength for families connected with the fishing industry. Several members of Annalong Presbyterian work at sea, while many women are employed in the fish processing business. In recent years some hardship has been experienced by the County Down community as a result of quota imposition and the curtailment of white fish fishing along the coastline. Presbyterian Moderator Dr Lockington comments:

"We as a broader church family have been aware of the problems facing farmers of late, my visit to Annalong this Sunday will also help me find out more about difficulties facing communities close to the sea. However, we will also pause to thank God for His many Blessings down the years and know that we can continue to rely on the hope that He always gives us in the Gospel. I look forward to sharing this hope with Annalong Presbyterian this Sunday."
