Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Lockington has issued the following statement commenting on the issue of decommissioning.
The Presbyterian Church has been supportive of the politicians who have sought to implement the new political structures in Northern Ireland.
The ceasefires and the formation of the Executive have given rise to optimism among many that a new era of peaceful political co-operation is possible. That ought to have been further consolidated by now by a start to decommissioning.
When so many have gone so far in negotiating and implementing the Agreement it is reasonable to expect paramilitary groups to meet their moral obligations to begin to decommission their weapons. The vast majority of people in Ireland want peace and in that peace there is no reason to hold illegal weapons.
