Moderator Is Chief Guest At Open Day

Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Lockington will be the chief guest this Sunday 11-07-99 at the Open Day at Guysmere Camp being held at the Presbyterian Youth Centre in Castlerock when he conducts morning service for the campers at 9.45am in the local Presbyterian Church.

Campers from all over Ireland are keeping alive the 70 year tradition of the summer camp which this year runs from from July 9 until July 17 with daily activities starting at 7.45am in a programme totally geared for teenagers including a range of sports, visits to attractions, arts and crafts, quizzes, expeditions and walks. The emphasis is on having good fun, creating friendships and presenting not only the physical side of life but also the spiritual side as well.

Instructing and organising the boys is a group of 30 leaders together with a chaplaincy team of four ministers. In charge of the camp is Rev Philip McCrea, minister of Maghera Presbyterian Church.

'During the week we have planned over 20 different activities and sports for the campers to get involved in,' explained Philip. 'There is something for everyone from football to fishing - superstars to gladiators. Also it gives the opportunity to introduce the campers to Jesus Christ in a way that shows what He has to offer is vital to them and their lives.'

Two years ago the Presbyterian Church opened new facilities at Guysmere at a cost of £0.5m. These included a sports hall, larger kitchen, several activity rooms and improved showers and bathroom accommodation.

In addition to the Camp service at 9.45am, the Moderator will conduct morning worship in Castlerock Presbyterian Church at 11.00am

A Girls' camp has just finished at Guysmere and later in the summer , 9-13 August, there will be a football camp with professional coaches from 'Athletes in Action'.
